  6.     MEANS OF ASCENT by Robert A. Caro (Knopf; $24.95). This
  7. second volume of an extended biography of Lyndon Baines Johnson
  8. offers a hair-raising, white-knuckle ride through the 1940s,
  9. when its hero-villain clawed, scrambled and cheated his way
  10. toward the political mountaintop.
  11.  
  12.     THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF JUDAISM edited by Geoffrey Wigoder
  13. (Macmillan;  $75). The publisher of 1987's indispensable
  14. 16-volume Encyclopedia of Religion is back with this succinct
  15. one-volume compendium of Jewish topics, from Abortion to Zion.
  16. Virtues: clarity for nonspecialists and balance between modern
  17. concepts and respect for tradition.

  19.     THE BOY SCOUT HANDBOOK (Boy Scouts of America; $4.95). "Be
  20. Prepared" takes on new meaning in the latest edition of the
  21. 80-year-old guide. In addition to learning knots and first aid,
  22. scouts are now advised to "say no" to drugs and be aware of
  23. child abuse. In order to remain "brave, clean and reverent,"
  24. they are encouraged to blow the whistle on dealers and abusers.

  26.     THEATER

  28.     LETTICE & LOVAGE. Peter Shaffer (Equus, Amadeus) wrote this
  29. Broadway comedy as a showcase for Maggie Smith. She returns the
  30. favor by giving the performance of her career as a stately home
  31. tour guide who devalues fact for fancy.
  32.  
  33.     THE GRAPES OF WRATH. This adaptation of John Steinbeck's
  34. landmark novel is everything that Broadway shows typically are
  35. not: political, conscience-stricken, expansive (the cast
  36. numbers 35) and epic. Much more realistic than the
  37. inspirational Henry Fonda film, the production by Chicago's
  38. Steppenwolf Company is flawed, sometimes slow, but deeply,
  39. achingly honest.

  41.     TELEVISION
  42.  
  43.     EQUAL JUSTICE (ABC, Wednesdays, 10 p.m. EST). A band of
  44. young lawyers struggle to retain their ideals, and win a few
  45. cases, in a big-city D.A.'s office. ABC's new courtroom series
  46. matches up well against NBC's L.A. Law: more grit and less
  47. sanctimony.

  49.     HA! (debuting April 1). From MTV comes cable's second
  50. network devoted strictly to laughs. But unlike HBO's Comedy
  51. Channel, which features MTV-style clips, this one will offer
  52. full-length shows: both new fare and reruns of everything from
  53. Sergeant Bilko to Saturday Night Live.

  55.     MOVIES

  57.     JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO. In this wan bit of whimsy from
  58. Moonstruck writer John Patrick Shanley, Tom Hanks plays a young
  59. man who believes he is dying and so agrees to jump into a live
  60. volcano. The picture makes no more sense than its synopsis,
  61. though Meg Ryan beguiles in three different roles.

  63.     TOO BEAUTIFUL FOR YOU. A French businessman (Gerard
  64. Depardieu) has a gorgeous, loving wife (Carole Bouquet). So how
  65. come he loves frowsy Josiane Balasko? Because in a Bertrand
  66. Blier movie, fate always drives men into the brick wall of
  67. their improbable lust. This bracing, supersonic comedy plays
  68. mid-life crisis for all it's worth: as high farce, with a body
  69. count.

  71.     MUSIC
  72.  
  73.     KONBIT!: BURNING RHYTHMS OF HAITI (A&M). Twelve scorchers
  74. from the turbulent Caribbean isle, assembled by film director
  75. Jonathan Demme. The record's a strong political gesture (most
  76. of the tunes have a social conscience that's both chilling and
  77. chillin') and the season's most salubrious rhythm assault.

  79.     COURTNEY PINE: THE VISION'S TALE (Island/Antilles). Young
  80. (24), gifted,  black and British, saxman Courtney Pine is his
  81. country's most popular jazz performer. His third album, a mix
  82. of standards and originals, shows off a controlled lyricism and
  83. two different voices: wailing and reedy on soprano, muzzy and
  84. funky on tenor. But Pine's stylish man at the piano, Ellis
  85. Marsalis, almost steals the album.

  87.     DR. JOHN TEACHES NEW ORLEANS PIANO (Homespun Video). "I
  88. think," says Dr. John in his best gone-fishing voice, "we're
  89. gonna start off with a little Frankie and Johnny, a la
  90. Professor Longhair." No matter if you don't know about the good
  91. professor (the past master of R. and B. keyboard, Crescent City
  92. style) or aren't sure about the good doctor either (one of
  93. Longhair's foremost disciples, the winner of a 1990 Grammy
  94. Award for a duo jazz vocal and a kind of living archive of
  95. musical history). Just sit back and watch Dr. John work his way
  96. through the likes of C.C. Rider and Pine Top Boogie. You may
  97. not be able to play the tunes when the videotape's over -- it
  98. takes a pretty advanced pianist even to follow the Doc's
  99. fingering -- but you will have got a graduate course in soul.

  105.     DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER, New York Public Library, New York
  106. City. A winning collection of paintings, sculpture and photos
  107. demonstrating that (baseball) diamonds are a fan's best friend.

  110.     REMBRANDT'S LANDSCAPES: DRAWINGS AND PRINTS, National
  111. Gallery of Art, Washington. Neither his usual subject nor his
  112. familiar oil medium, but the master's bucolic visions are
  113. brilliant. Through May 20.
